We all have days where we feel like nothing is going our way. And, on the flip side, those wonderful days where it feels like we’re on the top of our game.
For me, today was the latter. At least in the fitness realm. Allow me to explain …
Today started with Marathon Adventures Bootcamp. I’ve come to love these early Tuesday and Thursday sessions. Our group of runners meets at 5:30 in the morning to do fun things like speedwork and ab work and tempo runs and special running drills. These runners have become friends — people I know I can count on for inspiration and “way to go Kimis” just when I need them. And I like to provide the same.
During the summer session, we have a fairly set schedule. But in the winter? It’s always a surprise — kinda like our weather.
Well, this morning I had already agreed to meet up with one of the other bootcampers for a pre-run. I had hoped for three miles because that’s what my training schedule told me to do. And I wasn’t sure what our bootcamp session would bring. We ended up getting in 2.25 miles in just over 23 minutes. While we were running, I told her, “I bet they have us do a tempo run today.”
Lo and behold: Tempo run. Four miles.
My hamstrings were still aching from our Tuesday morning session, so I wasn’t expecting much. But once I got running, I felt great. And I pulled out a pretty excellent run: 4.04 miles, 37 minutes.
I updated my Facebook status shortly after my workout:
Feels so good to know I left it all out there this morning. Tough run. Great run.
By this afternoon, I was definitely feeling it — tired, slow legs. Tired, slow body. Good workouts do that to me. Plus, well, getting up at 4 a.m. is bound to sleepify me.
But, there’s no rest for the weary. Tonight was Trainer 2.5 night!
Earlier in the week I had texted Trainer 2.5 about tonight’s workout:
“I’m saving my legs for you, so we need to press and squat like crazy on Thursday.”
Well, big mistake. It’s like he took me seriously, or something.
I asked for legs, and I got legs. On top of my already-tired legs.
- Weighted Squats
- Leg presses
- Weighted, standing lunges
- Leg curls
- Leg extensions
- Calf raises
- And, for good measure, a nice, long fartlek session (10 fartlek segments — we got to six, then I said “why not one more” and then we decided it was bad luck to end on an odd number and then I was so close to 10 that we decided to finish it out)
My new Facebook status?
Remember when I said I left it all out on the road this morning? Apparently there was still a little left, and it’s lying in a puddle of my sweat on the floor at the gym.
Today I am proud. Proud that I pushed myself past my limits, past my comfort zone. These were tough workouts. But, guess what? I’m tougher. And I got stronger today.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go take some vitamin C, drink a ton of water and go to bed. I’m plum tuckered out.
